Warren R. Loos
Is a fine art photographer living in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Personal Statement
Warren R. Loos, a Honolulu-based fine art photographer, brings sensibilities refined by decades of clinical practice as a medical psychologist to his photographic practice.
Warren began photographing "landscapes" through the window of his 18-wheeler traversing the lower 48 states as an independent long-haul trucker. Later, he would earn a BA in Psychology from Boston University and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
By 2013, seeking an artistic outlet to see beyond what had become obscure, Warren returned to photography. His photographic practice has focused on landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, abstract impressionist expressions, and, to a degree, self-portraiture.
Warren continues his photographic studies with David Ulrich through Pacific New Media (PNM) and his teachers Franco Salmoiraghi, Lydia Panas, and Ric Noyle. He is an active member of the PNM Community, where he studies with a core group of dedicated photographers.
Warren’s photography has appeared in fifteen juried shows in Hawai‘i and the Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon. He received the Pacific New Media Portfolio Awards (2022) and the Halekulani Corporation Peter Shaindlin Award (2015). His work is also held in private collections in Hawai’i, Colorado, and Washington, DC.
Artist Statement
I am less interested in the appearance of things, that which is manifest or is first seen. Instead, what I find to be more interesting is what lies behind or underneath what we initially see. Here, one finds nuance, texture, gesture, highlights, shadows, lines and forms, symbols, and metaphors that reveal the richness of who we are and communicate how we find ourselves in the world.
